How To Update Table Of Contents In Word Mac

In a word processing document, yous tin can add a table of contents for the whole certificate or for each section or part of the document. Yous can then change the font, font size and color of text; adjust spacing; and add leader lines.

  1. If y'all haven't already done and then, apply paragraph styles to the text yous want to appear in the tabular array of contents.

  2. Click the View menu button in the toolbar, so choose Table of Contents.

  3. Click Edit at the top of the sidebar, so select the paragraph styles you lot want to include.

  4. Place the insertion point where yous want the tabular array of contents to appear, and then do 1 of the following:

    • Add a TOC for the whole document: Click the Insert Table of Contents button at the bottom of the Table of Contents sidebar. Entries are gathered from the entire document.

      Notation: If the Insert Table of Contents button is dimmed, brand sure you placed the insertion bespeak. If it's notwithstanding dimmed, the document may exist a folio layout document, not a word processing document, and you tin can't add a TOC to it.

    • Add a TOC for this section: Choose Insert > Table of Contents > Department. Entries are gathered from but the section where yous're inserting the table of contents.

    • Add a TOC for content up to the next TOC: Choose Insert > Table of Contents > To Next Occurrence. Entries are gathered between this table of contents and the next table of contents.

      Note: If you don't see Table of Contents in the Insert menu, make sure that y'all clicked the Insert menu at the elevation of your screen, not the Insert button in the toolbar.

  5. To format the text and add leader lines, click the table of contents to select it.

    When the tabular array of contents is selected, a bluish line appears around it and its text is highlighted in bluish.

  6. In the Format  sidebar, click the Text tab.

  7. Use the controls in the Font section to change the look of the font.

  8. To modify the formatting click the disclosure pointer next to Tabs, and in the tabular array below Default Spacing, do any of the following:

    • Change the leader lines: Click the arrows in the Leader cavalcade and cull a line manner.

    • Adjust the line position: Click the arrows in the Alignment column.

    • Accommodate spacing between the tabular array of contents entry and the page number: Double-click the value in the Stops column, blazon a new value, and then press Render on the keyboard. The smaller the number, the shorter the altitude.
